Diplomatic Relation between Thailand and Nigeria

The Kingdom of Thailand and the Federal Republic of Nigeria established diplomatic relation on 1 November 1962  with the subsequent opening of the Royal Thai Embassy in Lagos and the appointment of the first Thai Ambassador to Nigeria in 1963.  It was the first Thai Embassy in the African continent.  After much deliberation on the deteriorating political and security situations in Nigeria, the Thai cabinet made a difficult decision on 2 July 1996 to temporarily close the Royal Thai Embassy in Lagos taking effect from 30 November 1996.

The Royal Thai Government appointed Dr. Folarin Gbadebo-Smith as the Honorary Consul of Thailand in Lagos in 1999 to maintain and strengthen the diplomatic and commercial relations between the two countries.  On 18 July 2009, the Thai Cabinet which was acutely aware of the ties of friendship between Thailand and Nigeria and the desire to fully resume the Thai diplomatic presence in Nigeria, approved the permanent closure of the building of the Royal Thai Embassy in Lagos and relocated it to Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.  The Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja was open in December 2009.  The current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

On its part, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria used to designate its Embassy in Manila, the Philippines with jurisdiction over Thailand.  After that, it opened the Nigerian Embassy in Bangkok in February 2000 and appointed Prince Ademola Olugbade Aderele as the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Kingdom of Thailand Thailand.

The diplomatic relation between Thailand and Nigeria is cordial and mutually beneficial.
